  • Ahol Sniffs Glue Opening Little Havana’s MERCENARY SQUARE Mercenary Square, an off-the-grid, multi-culti forum in Little Havana, marks its barrio baptism with Ahol: Full-Time, a solo show featuring new works by South Florida-based artist Ahol Sniffs Glue. Opening Februar…y 17th from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at 537 SW 12th Avenue, Miami, the exhibit portrays the noted talent’s vision of life, labor and unrequited love on the mean streets of the Big Mango.
Best known for soaring urban murals depicting expansive fields of drowsy eyes reflecting the condition of Miami’s hardest working but least recognized residents, Ahol’s show marks a striking departure for the artist. The homegrown talent, who hails from Hialeah, continues drawing inspiration from the urban environment and systems of society which dehumanize its inhabitants.  But here, Ahol has made slipping through the membrane separating his work as an artist creating “full-time” from the harsh necessity of laboring to earn a living at two jobs, the focus of his exhibit.
For Ahol, the towering walls of our metropolis inspiring his creative freedom have become starkly contrasted by the constrictive confines of the office cubicle during the daily grind.  While his new work remains labor intensive and obsessive in nature, Ahol’s deceptively simple, yet complex renderings both portray the veneer of our everyday surroundings and the dull, job-related conflicts often encountered in a dysfunctional workplace.
He is additionally presenting a multi-media installation created in collaboration with Julian Yuri Rodriguez. The site-specific video work skews consumerism, mass media marketing strategies and the evaporating boundaries between highbrow and lowbrow culture. It also references the performative nature of street mural painting within the office-like confines of a storefront in the migrant neighborhood.
Mercenary Square was initiated by artist and critic Carlos Suarez De Jesus with the hopes of introducing emerging and underrepresented artists to Little Havana and South Florida audiences in an unexpected venue with a distinct urban barrio flavor.
DJ Set by:  Otto Von Bass Warrior, Mr. Feathers and Jose Bluejeans Complimentary cocktails will be served courtesy of Don Abuelo Rum from Panama during the opening. After Party following the reception beginning at 11:00 P.M. at the Vagabond located at 30 NE 14th Street, Downtown Miami. Special thanks to Don Abuelo Rum, the Vagabond, The Barlington Group, ArtdealerMiami.com and Artspace MAGQ.
Ahol: Full-Time opens February 17th from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at Mercenary Square, 537 SW 12th Street, Miami, Fl., 33130 and the exhibit runs through March 11. Admission is free to the public. For more information call Carlos Suarez De Jesus at 305-710-7642 or visit aholsniffsglue.com.
